Officer Mary Riley thought she knew what it meant to be a cop—until the night she chased a scream into a blood-soaked house and came face-to-face with something that shouldn’t exist.

In the shadows of Providence, she discovers a secret police division tasked with cases no one else will touch: possessions, vanishings, creatures from beyond, and crimes that defy reason. Partnered with the emotionally guarded Detective Shippe and the enigmatic Rashid, Riley must adapt fast or end up like the victims she’s sworn to protect.

But some truths are more dangerous than lies. The deeper she digs, the more Riley realizes the greatest threat isn’t what stalks the dark—it’s the secrets her own department is desperate to keep buried.

Fast-paced, chilling, and atmospheric, Providence Supernatural Crimes Unit blends the grit of police procedural with supernatural horror—perfect for fans of The X-Files, True Detective, and Supernatural.

Meet the Special Investigations team!

Mary Riley–just Riley, if you please– has worn the Providence Police badge for over five years, and for her, protect and serve isn’t just a motto—it’s a promise. Known for sharp instincts and a stubborn sense of justice, she’s the kind of cop who runs toward trouble when everyone else is backing away. That trait nearly got her killed the night she responded to what should have been a routine call on Brewster Street… and found herself staring down something that had no business existing outside of a nightmare. Now, she’s been recruited into the PPD’s most secretive division—Special Investigations, known unofficially as the Supernatural Crimes Unit. Off the clock, Mary lives in a modest Cranston apartment with her feline roommate, Samantha—a black cat with more attitude than most of Riley’s suspects, especially if she’s late with dinner. But after what she’s seen, Riley knows the world isn’t as simple as it used to be… and she’s about to find out just how deep the darkness in Providence runs.

Detective Thomas Shippe has spent over a decade staring into the abyss—and making sure it doesn’t stare back at the rest of Providence. A senior member of the Supernatural Crimes Unit, he’s hunted ghouls through sewer tunnels, burned out nests of things that don’t have names, and crossed paths with powers that could unravel the world. Shippe is all business, the kind of cop who keeps his emotions holstered and his eyes on the job. But when he cracks a joke? That’s when the team knows the situation has gone to hell. Fiercely loyal and razor-sharp in the field, Shippe is more than a tactician—he’s a guardian of secrets. His mission isn’t just to stop the monsters; it’s to make sure the rest of humanity never learns how close the darkness really is.

Captain Jack Thompson is the man holding the line between Providence and the things that shouldn’t exist. As the longest-surviving member of Special Investigations, he has seen it all—things that crawl out of the shadows, bleed through dimensions, and drive good men to lose their minds. But he keeps showing up, because he knows someone has to. Captain Thompson’s job isn’t just tough, it’s impossible. He commands a small, secret unit of cops tasked with fighting the nightmares nobody else knows about, and he’s got to make sure nobody finds out about them. When Special Investigations goes in, they go in alone. There’s no cavalry, no backup, because anyone who doesn’t know the truth about the enemies they face wouldn’t stand a chance. He’s a hardened cop, scarred by what he’s seen, but his priority has never changed: get the job done, bring his people home alive. Monsters come and go, but in Jack Thompson’s book, failure is never an option.

Abd Al Rashid is the team archivist, but he likes to call himself “a librarian on steroids.” When it comes to grimoires, cursed tomes, books bound in human skin, and the kind of artifacts that whisper to you when the lights go out, there are few people in the world who know more than he does. He isn’t a caster—at least not officially—but he does know more about magic than most who wield it. He’s also the team’s best dressed, a sense of personal pride he takes seriously. Rashid’s moral compass has a habit of pointing him straight into trouble. He has made enemies in powerful circles, and after an incident at a certain library in Lisbon, he’s no longer exactly welcome in Portugal. However, with the Supernatural Crimes Unit, he has found a home and people he can trust. These days, he helps the team unravel occult mysteries from behind a desk, but when the case calls for it, he doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty in the field.

Wendela is the team’s ‘special equipment consultant’ and the brains behind their magical gadgets and spells. Her arrangement with the Supernatural Crimes Unit is unconventional, to put it mildly. While she may seem like she’s just drinking herbal tea and chatting with her pet rat, she has far more experience in the magical world than you’d think. One thing is for certain: Wendela is much more than she appears. Her background may be a mystery, but she’s a critical member of the SCU team. For their most challenging cases, they rely on her extensive knowledge of the darker aspects of the arcane world. Without Wendela, there might not even be a Providence left to protect—but she’ll have to tell you about that case herself!

Detective Kevin Roberts looks like the last guy you’d expect to be hunting monsters. Short, a little soft around the middle, usually found in a wrinkled suit with a donut in one hand and a black coffee in the other. He plays the part of the affable, unassuming cop to perfection, and that’s exactly how he likes it. Under the rumpled exterior, Roberts is quicker, sharper, and deadlier than most people realize until it’s too late. That “harmless” vibe? It’s his favorite weapon, and it has worked on humans and monsters alike. When he moves, it’s fast, and when he strikes, it’s decisive. Monsters and magic don’t faze him at all. Like Riley, Roberts earned his spot on the SCU the hard way: by staring down something that shouldn’t exist and walking away in one piece. He jokes about luck, but the truth is, Roberts knows how to survive in a world where survival is never a guarantee.

Father Carl Franklin may not be a priest anymore, but the weight of his past still weighs heavily on his shoulders. Once serving with the Irish Defence Forces, officially as a chaplain but unofficially in a much more significant role, Father Carl has seen combat that most priests couldn’t imagine. He doesn’t talk about it, and everyone in the SCU knows better than to ask. His fall from grace came during an exorcism gone wrong… or, depending on who you ask, an exorcism gone right. Faced with a choice between obeying the Church and saving a child’s life, Father Carl broke ranks. The Church called it heresy; the SCU called it initiative. These days, he’s their spiritual backbone—and sometimes their last line of defense. That might mean a quiet blessing before a mission… or stepping into the breach with a custom combat shotgun slung over his shoulder and a couple ‘special’ grenades tucked in his bag. Faith may have cost him a lot, but in the war against darkness, Father Carl still believes.
